The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse was conceptualized by Miami Light Project in order to address the needs of our artistic community within the changing cultural landscape of Miami and within the context of an evolving international field of art and culture. The Light Box is a creative space for artists and an intimate place of gathering for our community where new work is experienced in its various stages of development. The space is intended to support experimentation and innovation in a highly creative setting and to encourage artists to intersect with audiences in new ways. At The Light Box, artists have the opportunity to research new ideas, explore their artistic disciplines, and develop their unique voices through extended workshops and residencies, international cultural exchange, and the presentation of new work.
Of equal importance at The Light Box is the notion that cultural workers also benefit from increased creativity and productivity when sharing a workspace. To date, The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse is home to some of Miami’s leading cultural organizations: Arts for Learning, The M Ensemble Theater Company, and Miami Light Project (along with MLP’s two resident theater companies, Teo Castellanos/D-Projects and Mad Cat Theatre Company). As we develop our cooperative work model we will pursue collaborative and alternative approaches to developing new artistic work, fundraising, marketing and audience development. It is from this collaborative approach that we intend to create an environment that
supports sustainable growth for all of our organizations.
Annually, The Light Box programming will include the development of new work by Miami-based artists; the presentation of performances by nationally and internationally recognized visiting artists; open rehearsals where the community is invited to observe and interact; works in progress of new productions; exhibitions and installations of visual art; workshops and camps for young people aspiring to pursue careers in the arts; forward thinking international cultural exchange projects as well as master classes and research opportunities for professional artists. Each organization participating in the space will continue with their distinct programs, and over time our joint projects and collective work will result in a unique artistic profile for The Light Box at Goldman Warehouse.

Arts for Learning (A4L) is an arts-in-education nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing teaching and learning through the arts. As one of Miami’s leading sources of arts-in-education services, A4L works with professional visual and performing artists to provide quality arts-based programs that connect the arts to other core-curriculum subjects to support academic achievement and child development. All A4L programs teach life and communication skills, support literacy and problem solving skills, foster self-discovery, and build self esteem. A4L’s comprehensive services include teacher professional development, multimedia classroom resources, and community arts instruction and programming. These services are delivered to approximately 10,000 students in more than 100 schools, preschools, after-school programs and summer camps throughout Miami-Dade County.

The M Ensemble is Florida’s oldest established African American theater company offering musical, contemporary, classical and original plays, theater workshops for children and adults, and special vibrant presentations for Kwanzaa. Today the company is listed as a major cultural arts institution by the Miami-Dade County Cultural Affairs Council. It exposes Miami-Dade inner-city youth to the fundamentals of live stage performances and provides opportunities for them to learn about the business of arts and entertainment. And, although success has been elusive at times, the results have been phenomenal. M Ensemble has definitely raised the level of awareness of the theatre industry in South Florida’s African-American community.
